Houston police responded to a fatal wrong-way collision around 4:48 a.m. Sunday near the South Loop West and Tierwester Road, according to preliminary information.

A driver traveling the wrong way crashed head-on into a Chevrolet Suburban. The Suburban’s driver was taken to Ben Taub Hospital in critical condition. Police said they saw no signs of impairment.

Investigators have not determined where the wrong-way driver entered the freeway. He was the only person in his vehicle, police said. Responding personnel arrived and pronounced the wrong-way driver deceased on scene.

While officers blocked the roadway, another truck hit two patrol vehicles. Officers were outside the vehicles, and no one was injured. The truck’s driver showed no signs of impairment but told officers he had not been paying attention.

HPD is handling the investigation.
